Maria Louka has studied psychology and for the last 10 years she has been working as a journalists based in Athens. Currently, Maria is making a documentary observing the mourning process through some murder cases that shocked Greek society, such as the assassination of immigrant Shahzat Lukman, anti-fascist Pavlos Fyssas, and LGBTQI+ activist Zac Kostopoulos. Maria is also a chief editor at the documentary series for Cosmote History. She’s writing at Greek websites Popaganda and Omnia about gender violence issues, human rights, refugee crisis, and governance authoritarianism.
In the past, Maria has worked with some of the largest media outlets in Greece (Vice Greece, Epsilon, Vima, Protagon, Inside Story, etc.) as editor or contributor, and with some international media as fixer/producer (New York Times, Washington Post). She was the recipient of the Eleni Vlachou Journalism Award in 2013, Migration Media Award (3rd prize, 2018) and has been shortlisted for the European Press Prize four times (in 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2018).
